Mfengu Woman's Pubic Apron - South Africa

Dense, rectangular, tapestry-like panels are prevalent devices in Mfengu beadwork, and can be found in a variety of sizes on necklaces and other adornments. This fine woman’s apron features one large frontal panel fastened with buttons to a fringed waistband. Bright diamond motifs stand out vividly on the dark blue field of the apron, and are echoed in more subtle fashion along the length of the white waist. In contrast to the inkciyo, the iphoco is worn on top of the skirt so as to be seen by others in the community.
