Lozi Bowl - Zambia

A beautifully carved lidded bowl with a decorative finial in the form of a swimming duck. This vessel is graced with a lovely, developed patina that displays deep, dark browns alongside warm umbers and honey-colored highlights.

The Lozi used lidded, ornamental bowls for food storage. Such works also reinforced the status of their owners as they were carved by members of subjugated communities exclusively for use at Lozi courts.
