Knobkerrie - South Africa

Knobkerries were ubiquitously carried by southern African men as weapons, dance staffs and symbols of status. While typically designed as somewhat utilitarian objects, they were oftentimes crafted with a high aesthetic sensibility. This particular example, carved in light, honey-colored wood, features a head composed of three disc-like forms that together seem to evoke an abstracted face.
