GOURD

TURKANA/MERU, KENYA

Gourds are used throughout Africa for a wide range of practical, cultural, and artistic purposes. Common uses include being used as containers and utensils, musical instruments, decorative arts, religious and ceremonial uses, medicinal uses and for cooking and fermentation.

This large and beautiful gourd was treasured enough to have been repaired with metal. For a similar example, see African Forms by Marc Ginzberg, p. 79.
