Bronze armlets or cuffs were worn by select men in western Africa, granted by community leaders as symbols of status and recognition. Once donned, in some cases they might never be removed. Sometimes fashioned with simple ribs, at others with far more intricate designs incorporating human figures and faces, they are uniformly impressive pieces of traditional metalwork. This finely wrought cuff is adorned with textural borders of sinuous lines and concentric semicircle motifs, set off with small raised bosses.
