The rest and base of this important headrest both have triangular carved decoration, mirroring its dark and light wood tones. Done by the hand of a master carver, this headrest was carved from a single block of wood.
This type of neckrest also exists as a single form (see a single illustrated example in The Art of Southeast Africa, Kevin Conru, page 61) and were probably made by one particular carver in Natal.
Another double headrest almost identical to this one was acquired in 1896 by the Museum fur Volkerkunde , Vienna.
