Ashanti Stool - Ghana

Enormously complex and varied are the forms in which Akan and specifically Ashanti stools were made. They could be used as casual furniture or in religious rituals. In the owner’s lifetime the stool was tied to his soul; at death it could become a shrine at which the departed’s spirit could be invoked. This example has a beautiful glossy patina.
