Beaked Battle Club - Fiji

Known natively as totokia, the beaked battle clubs of Fiji are some of the most iconic of Oceanic weapons. This is a classic and beautifully carved example, with a thick, sharply curved body and carefully detailed head. The grip is richly textured with a dazzling section of sawtooth designs carved in relief.

Designed for deadly efficiency, a totokia could easily pierce a human skull, the weighty mass of its head channeling added kinetic energy into its central spike. They were highly valued weapons, given individual names by chiefs and sometimes buried with them. It was believed they would aid their owner in their journey to Bulu, the afterworld.

Approximately two inches of the tip of this example has been restored.
