Bassa Mask - Liberia

A great sense of mass imbues this Bassa mask, imposing with its classically large brow, full cheeks, and heavy, almond-shaped silhouette. As the face sinks forcefully in at the eyes, the nose and brow are projected dramatically outward, along with the crested coiffure. A few teeth still remain in the mouth. Age and use have lent a rich patina to the mask's surface.
