Tsonga Shangaan Headrest - Zimbabwe

The dramatic sweep of two opposing curves dominates the composition of this beautiful Zimbabwe headrest. A multitude of thin semicircular forms is at play at all key points of this elegantly poised piece, reinforcing and emphasizing the flexed silhouette of its major limbs.

Rev. Jaques was a Swiss missionary who arrived in South Africa in the 1920s and field collected in the Limpopo region. He formed the finest known collection of southern African headrests, which was acquired by the Oppenheimer family and is on permanent display at the Johannesburg Art Gallery.
